It's true. Like the director had said before the film was released. It truly is a film that cannot be anything but a musical. Unlike other musicals, characters suddenly singing is not treated as normal. The singing in this film is largely symbolic. Though compared to the first film, this one lacks impact because of the theatricality. We as audience are astutely aware of our presence as audience. We are watching Joker's story. We are not a part of this story. That's why the ending of the film was not as impactful as the first film. Nevertheless I still very much enjoyed the film and the director's artistic intentions behind decisions are clear.
