While there are certain cringeworthy scenes that I'd don't need in detail, the overall story is riveting and original. The characters are all well-drawn and play difficult roles extremely well. Molly Shannon as the intrusive mother-in-law is a study in tragic-comedy that is executed without smirking asides (except by the manager who arranged to have her appear at her son's honeymoon). To me it's far more a tragedy than a comedy, unless it's the darkest sort that's is so burdensome on the human spirit it's funny.
