Truly awful film. I'm not sure why Cusack and Philippe, both decent actors are starring in such dreck. The premise is based somewhat in fact. That''s not the problem. The problem is lazy writing and utterly improbable scenes, much like slasher films."I think we should go into the dark and steaming basement instead of jumping in the running car" type of decisions. Things like only hitting the bad guy once with the poker instead of three times in order to knock him out or break his arm. If she had, you would then miss the chase scene through the jungle. Getting the drop on the bad girl villain, but leaving her unbound... and with a cell phone so she could call the other bad guys. Driving off the main road while being chased so you can do the "jeep half off the cliff we have to get out!!!" thang. The bad guy is in a terrible crash with the car burning but miraculously shows up unharmed, in a new car with a gun, chasing you. I won't belabor this further. If you like chase scenes and literal cliff hangers all based in utter fantasy, watch it. Otherwise, hard pass.

Quite possibly the worst Western I've ever seen. It contains nearly every cliche imaginable. A Marshall who comes to avenge his Preacher brothers murder. A town mayor who is terrorizing the townspeople. An evil righthand man. A fallen woman who is inexplicably strangelled. A woman who seemingly has no job (at least she's not the schoolmarm) other than to read scripture to children (on the street, although they don't appear to be urchins). A false accusation about the Marshall who is then horse whipped before the trial. No trial. A contingent of Army camped outside the town (the reason is unclear although unrepentant Confederates are mentioned). Townspeople who ban together to fight the bad guys. The Marshall is saved, the cavalry arrive (late, even though they were camped nearby) the townspeople are safe (mostly), there is a tender moment between the woman and the Marshall before he tells her there are people in the "south" who need his help, then he proceeds to ride into the sunset (literally) although he's supposed to be going south and the sun almost always sets in the west. The screenplay is awful and factually incoherent (the Army captain refers to the Marshall being in prison when he's just being held in the town jail), the acting is flat and false and even though it's shot on location it has the feel of a low budget Western done in the 50's. Don't waste your time. It's 93 minutes you'll never get back.

Children with little to hold onto in their young lives are drawn into a dangerous game of survival by circumstances that roll further and further out of their control. One attempt at salvation ultimately leads to a final one. Ultimately, they only have each other. The young actors do an amazing jobs of saying everything that needs to be said, with few words. A real sleeper that deserves more attention.
