I have a lot of thoughts.
The short of it:
I'll keep watching, because (at least for now) each episode seems better than the last one. The actors seem to be getting more comfortable, and the writing is somewhat-better. Interested to see how this will develop further, and I definitely hope there is more than one season.
The long of it...
The good:
The cinematography is lovely. Beautiful camera work (seriously, it's great), fun settings. I miss the hard rock music, but not bad overall.
Lata is a lovely character with a nice voice, and the casting of John was fairly on-point. And Millie! Probably my favorite character so far; she definitely gives 'mom vibes.' Great actress.
Surprisingly, I'm glad that they're limiting the romance, at least for now. Sure, you have the undercurrent of it, but what really appealed to me about SPN proper was the family dynamic with monster hunting, not romantic love.
The monsters are pretty interesting too. I'd love to see some old ones for the nostalgia, but the background around the new ones is pretty good too.
The bad:
Carlos.
Dear Jensen, Danneel & other executive producers,
I'm all for representation. ALL for it. I love that you have a bisexual and nb character unapologetic about who they are. (Do not listen to all of the people complaining about 'wokeness' -- they are wrong). But why, why did you have to make them a mere combination of stereotypes? Sassiness, cheating on their partners, being super uncaring and dismissive about everything. At least for now, those are all the things I know about Carlos, and that does not a compelling character make.
Which kind-of brings me to the fact that if Misha was included in this, I doubt such a mistake would have been made. So, to sum this up –– representation? Yes. Love it. Stereotypes? Please, just don't.
Sincerely,
Marie
Outside of Carlos, I do think Mary was miscast slightly, but the actress is growing on me. The very fast introduction of the 'big bad' was a bit of a mistake too, but not fatal. And, unlike many other people, I'm not extremely bothered by timeline issues if, in the end, they are fixed through... I don't know, angel magic or something.
But ––
Please don't try to change SPN too much from what it was. Demons having metallic voices? No. Exorcisms being very well-known and demons being easy to take down? No, please rewatch season one. Djinn entering dreams? No, they capture people and trap them in fantasy-worlds.
So, to end this all...
I'll keep watching. I liked 'Masters of War.' Very much. And I hope that I'll get truly attached to these characters. But what I'd love most of all is if these key mistakes could be fixed, because I do think that –– as show and a story –– the Winchesters has potential. I just want to see it bloom.
The very best of luck to you all.
