For all of the people giving one star reviews, I can tell you didn't understand. The "flashbacks" were her and her daughter in the future. I know this because she talked about how if you immerse yourself with a language it controls every way you think. And since these aliens are obviously more intelligent then us, it makes sense. The aliens are giving a "gift." Which is the power to see the future. She only inherits this gift after making contact inside the vessel. The movie makes sense people, you just didn't try hard enough to put the pieces together.
