It's funny that so many don't understand the ending... It was a callback to the scene where she put an unlit cigarette in her mouth and pretended to smoke it. Her cop son took it from her and tried it and said "Yeah, pretending does help." The actual lighting and smoking of the cigarette at the end was her way of saying "I'm not pretending anymore."
