The first film is mainly about economics (specifically trickle-down economics), this second one is mainly about the nature of Law. The main plot is driven by the brutality of the Annointed One who is depicted as blind. For all intent and purposes, he is the Law in the Pit, and he is depicted like the Blind Lady of Justice. His Law is one where Justice can only be achived by total and blind obedience to the Law, with no exception in order to achieve this idea of "fairness" (here in the distribution of resources/food). But just like in real life, society cannot be regulated this way by law enforcement. Law when enforced without discretion, without human touch and without a "higher purpose" (what legal philosophy calls Natural Law) will end up bringing chaos to society, disorder instead of order.
I love how both Platform 1 and Platform 2 uses children as "the message". Truly at the end of the day, amidst all confusing Systemic insanity we all face on this Earth, the only thing that can and should guide us in all the decisions we have to make is how would this affect the children, the next generation, the Future.
I love the films' underlying feel of things being cyclical actually. History, life, all tends to be cyclical too.
For me Platform 1 and 2 is all about life & human nature, in how we try to navigate and survive life in the face of uncertainty, confusion, oppression, etc. And it is NOT a negative thing to not have the film give you an aswer to everything. Just like Life there would have to be some ambiguity, some confusion, some unanswered questions, giving rise to subjective interpretation and personal connections and feelings - If in a film everything is neatly packaged and explained, where is the fun in that. I prefer films like this where we are given the Freedom to subscribe meaning how we feel fit.
On that note I feel that the negative reviews and one-stars are totally unwarranted. I watched the Platform 1 and 2 back to back, and Platform 2 is in no way inferior to its predecessor. The strength of the predecessor is the surprise at a new idea, hence why it was a sleeper hit. But the follow up film for me is just as enjoyable, if you are not a stickler to having answers to everything and nitpicking on things too much. Watch it with an open mind!
I feel really connected to the Main Character (Perempuan), and can feel her inner struggles. Indeed our personal demons make a worse Purgatory than even something like The Pit.
