Ok, I’m a guy that reads lots of books, I have read few in the ww1&2 era that specifically show the perspective from a soldier, and all have been drastically boring, not even depressing or even sorrowful, but plain out boring. So before I read this book, I already had low expectations, even so, the book didn’t even reach those. The author barely captures emotions within a scene, and instead puts multiple lines of pure dialogue and used the word “said” way too often, as well as jumping back in forth from one non descriptive scene to another with little to none set ups. As expected, with such plain and bland writing, the protagonist has no character development, e.g. (SPOILER WARNING) his leg injury had little relevance to the plot as he rarely brought it up or it barely affected him, mentally. with no surprise, this was the case for most of the side characters as well, including the love interest herself, who fits the stereotype of a lonely desperate widow, (Protag showed no signs of romantic affection, but rather pure lust towards her), in fact the only consistent character was Rinaldi, his bunk mate who always had the right personality for each moment. Anyways this book is an honest 3.5/10, I would not recommend reading it at all, a total waste of time, speak of which, it doesn’t help the fact such a short story has such an abundant amount of useless words in it!
