I think people don’t appreciate intelligent, thoughtful, philosophical films anymore. They just are trained to expect explosions and cgi.
This movie is absolutely lovely. I enjoyed every single moment of it. It was beautifully written, it felt so real and authentic in the conversation, the two main (really, only) actors had so much chemistry and you felt like they had known each other forever. The cinematography was gorgeous, and lent the feeling of these two being kind of the only people in the world (which they were to each other.)
Meg Ryan was delightful and funny, David Duchovny was charming and also funny. The film explores not just lost love, but how older people reckon with their lives, their choices, and the person they’ve become. It’s about so much more than a romance. It’s paced well, it’s quiet and thought-provoking, and just a really good film.
Truly I think people who hated this film don’t know what good film is.
