Kwame Appiah is the ultimate insider-outsider, someone different everywhere he goes by virtue of his background, education, profession, and race. As such, his prose is startlingly unique. It's not that his scholarship is better than his peers, though it often is--it's that his insights into the same books his peers have reviewed promulgate fresh insights.
In this particular book, Appiah turns his eye towards religion and European civilization, finding it wanting. Along the way, he demonstrates European Christian culture has identified itself in opposition to Islamic cultures, an unfortunate turn of events, given the ample cooperation found in both spheres. If you are into religious debates or religious history, you may enjoy The Lies that Bind (2018).
