WWII films made in the 50's relied on two things; the American male persona of the 1950's was a natural fit to the prime era of leading male actors, who could fill the production demands of technical advisors who were otherwise Admirals in the Pacific Fleet. And this film trys to measure up with character veneer (Das Boot) flattened to rage and fear, and in dangling dialogue spun-off 'Run Silent, Run Deep (1958)' - it succeeds in wasting assets otherwise available in fact based script, that doesn't start the engine before the boat sinks to the bottom with the cast and crew trapped inside. Macy was a weak choice for the US Navy, and the posturing the Germans as unduly sentimental - is a bow shot down the throat with a dud. I'll look forward to the remake - with a director.
