I felt that that the Gulabo Sitabo’s director did not understand the ethos of Lucknow except a superficial idea about some visual and verbal symbols. Except the Begum who looked credible, perhaps being form Lucknow herself, rest of the characters looked made-up. I had much higher expectations from Mr Bachchan, beyond his transformed looks. Songs had Bengal’s fragrance but perhaps lyrics in Urdu or Hindustani with a hint of the region’s music forms like ghazals, Qwaalli or thumri would have been more relevant. The script and screenplay were weak. Films’s pace was a bit slow and even patchy. Even Gulabo-Sitabo puppet’s reference looked forced. If it was not the fact that 100% of the film was shot in Lucknow, I would perhaps have felt bored. I would give full marks to the film only on one count - of having done some good to the local economy during the three-month shooting schedule...
