Rex Reynolds – Google

Mildly amusing at best... Two stars given for interesting plot and decent special effects. I was prepared to see Sandler prove himself in a drama rather than a comedy. I was sorely disappointed. I can only assume no American filmmaker would give Sandler the chance to do a serious movie so he went to Czechoslovakia instead. He should have stayed home. Don't get me wrong. The acting wasn't bad, but he did throw himself into a losing situation. The film had a lot of potential but failed at virtually every attempt. It is depressing, odd and not believable. Spoiler alert from here: It's unbelievable that any country's space program would send an astronaut into space that is psychologically unstable. It's extremely odd when an intelligent Alien spider just appears on his ship out of nowhere offering philosophical advice, even if it is only in his mind, which is never confirmed of course. It's highly unbelievable that a scientist turned astronaut's first instinct is to kill an intelligent alien that's obviously presenting no threat to him. And it's quite depressing that most of the movie is spent with him moping about the ship because his wife won't speak to him. And finally we're expected to believe that the Czechs and Korea are the only two powers that have sent astronauts into space to investigate a phenomenon and that they also have developed instant communication to a ship that is 500 million miles away and they can do this instantly where in actuality would be over an hour round trip communication. In short, don't waste your time on this film.

The plot, interesting. The acting and special effects are ok, but that's where the good news ends. The movie completely skips what could have been the best part, where mankind learns of the object and the excitement that would ensue. Instead, it begins with the ship already on its mission, to visit the object and determine its nature. In addition, the crew are highly unprofessional, with mental issues, short tempers, lack of respect for each other and negative attitudes. It seems no character can speak without constantly dropping the F bomb and they argue with each other non stop as if no one were in charge. Better logic could be found on any episode of a 1960s Star Trek episode than these idiots used in this movie.

This film is horrible! So many attempts of easily predictable, commonly used sub-plots and none of them done well! You never really get to know any if the characters. It doesn't seem to be viewed from anyone's point if view. You never know who is in charge as in several scenes main characters in the military bicker about what to do. There's no consistency from scene to scene. And to top it all of it's set 500 years in the future but without any explanation whatsoever they all drive today's cars and motorcycles, listen to today's style music, use the F word in every other sentence (every character) and STILL SMOKE CIGARETTES! I wonder how much the tobacco companies pay film makers to show the characters smoking? It's deplorable!

Thoroughly enjoyed this from beginning to end! If you're like me and while watching most movies constantly find yourself saying "That wouldn't happen", "That doesn't make sense.", "Why didn't they...", (you get the idea) then you may enjoy "The Man from Earth" as much as I did! It's all about a small group of colleagues being confronted with a thought provoking scenario and the ensuing conversation. Practically every question I would want to ask, had I been there, was asked and debated. The acting was superb, the casting perfect, and the plot unique. Can't wait to watch it again!

This film had potential but was not done well. Very interesting and original plot but that's about the only good news. So many things do not make sense it is hard to watch. As soon as you start to get to know the characters it moves on to another scene with new characters and you never find out what happened to the others. (Side note: The characters consist of students, scientists, and random "volunteers" and not one person can speak without dropping the F bomb.) Also they say that roughly half the population has been gobbled up by these mysterious doors but the streets are always empty. Where are the other half? Seemingly in lock down but we don't even ever see any of the government or any newscasters, paramedics or military, etc. Although they do make a point to have the sound of jets randomly buzzing by every 5 minutes of the entire movie but even that is awkwardly done. The one shining moment is when one scientist finds a way to communicate with the entity but, without warning or reason, we move on to a final scene that implies a strong, depressing prognosis and just like that, it's over.
