I had so much hope when I heard that star wars was making a show based in the high republic. I was hoping that it would be similar to Andor with a focus on world building, good acting, and interesting dialogue. I got the opposite though where it feels like the directors/writers were pushing their own agendas.
This show had so much potential, I was already familiar with half of the cast such as Lee Jung-jae, Dean-Charles Chapman, and Amandla Stenberg. I have seen multiple previous productions with each one of them and I believe they are all extremely talented actors. Sadly however that does not mean anything when given a bad script. As soon as I heard "Attack me with all your strength" followed up by a cringe inducing fight ending with the death of one of the only likeable jedi characters in the show I knew this would be difficult to get through.
Note that I have only seen episodes one and two and I got five minutes into episode three. I had to look up youtube reviews for the entirety of episode three. I just could not watch it due to the bad dialogue. We still have 5 more episodes so I do not know whether the series will get better or even worse.
I will also mention that I am completely fine with having diverse backgrounds and characters in star wars, Andor did a phenomenal job with this where there were numerous strong female characters, stories that followed characters from all different ethnicities, and the great display of a love relationship in the bank heist episodes including two female characters. While including all of these things andor was able to create a visually stunning thought provoking show that I am still fond of. This is because every character had depth and was well written, something that the acolyte does not have.
At the very base of this review. I just wanted to say that having a story in the high republic had the potential to be one of the greatest star wars shows to date, they had unlimited creative options they could have chosen from to make a truly special show, but instead they made the blandest most frustrating show that focused on pushing the writers agendas more than actually displaying anything interesting.
