I expected some soppy sentimental goo and was drowning in treacle by the end. All highly predictable but as innocent as a new born, transported me to a time when life was so much more wholesome. And saccharine ingested goo is sometimes the perfect drug for a rainy Sunday with the world outside falling apart. Who cannot love Paddington for that let alone when Olivia Colman is doing one of her caddish turns of which Leslie Philips would approve.

Wasn’t sure what to expect. I found the equally hyped film noir love lies bleeding a disappointment and for the first 10 mins the boobs and writhing had me thinking I’d gone to watch a porno which was all jolly uncomfortable. But then a story started to develop, part Reservoir Dogs, part Carry On Anything and then like an onion shedding its layers the characters developed real depth. Terrific acting by all, especially Madison (that must have been hard to film in parts), a gritty Brighton Beach setting and I left feeling as deeply moved as the ending intended

I must be weird. I seem to have diametrically opposite views to people with most movies I see. Loads of 1* reviews. Wtf? I didn’t go to see a documentary from the history channel. Of course the plot is a bit lame and far fetched. And yes the CGI deserves its own acting credit. But like Top Gun sequels, you don’t go to see a plausible plot, you go to be entertained with an over the top big screen experience. And that is what I got. Enthralled from start to finish. Were you not entertained?

Occasionally you see a band you have never heard of (in my case dua lipa on some late night bbc thing, Alice Merton at the sziget festival and confidence man at Glastonbury) and you get a sonic kick which screams who the hell are these guys. A bit of investigation letter and suddenly you have some new favourite music. Seeing CMan at Brixton in December and this album is a perfect backdrop. Just totally addictive irrespective of whether it is critically acclaimed
