This movie clearly isn't for everyone, and I could understand how some might find it difficult to watch. There are many people who don't like movies depicting war or violence, and if that is the case, this movie isn't for you. Yet, if a film isn't your "type" of film, it doesn't necessarily make it a bad film. So, I'm having difficulty understanding how some people are giving this film bad reviews. No, it isn't Shawshank Redemption or Last of the Mohicans, but it is dark, unique, gritty, and interesting. While it certainly isn't in the ranks with greats like Papillon and Cool Hand Luke, it does share some similarities with these films, in a dark, underground sort of way. Personally, I think Vince Vaughn is brilliant, and he keeps it from being just another movie about a tough guy in prison. Really, this movie is about his character's determination and self-sacrifice for the people he loves. I'm not going to give much away about Brawl in Cell Block 99, but if you enjoy dark, gritty movies, then this is one you don't want to miss.
