So for those who read the books and looking through the comments seems like quite a few people who did are about as mad at this as eragon, avatar the last airbender LA, and percy jackson. As a stand alone its somewhat passable and I could see kids under 8 liking it. However, that is not the target audience of the books. I started reading them when i was 9 or 10 at each books release and still enjoy them almost 20 years later. I'm also surprised more people aren't pissed that they completely excluded the mom who was sick and required a fairy with her magic almost fully restored to restore her health. The mom was a strong figure in later books so why the heck did you change gender roles just to only exclude her.
Cudgeon was a great villian to twist opal koboi but instead the made him her dog and didnt allow him to develop into the disfigured psychopath he was. once again this wasnt really meant for 6 year olds. Butler shouldve been at least eurasian as he was from northern russia originally and I dont know how many commenters have been to russia but not a lot of black people. His connections there play into the books frequently and his name was secret HE WAS BUTLER NOT DOM only a few people knew his name so he wouldnt be tracked and have everyone near him killed. His weapon was a sig sauer 365 to hold larger rounds and was important for the troll and many other fights including its slower slug penetration ability against the energy absorption fairy armor. Butlers sister juliet was supposed to be early 20s if i remember right and was wrestling professionally.
Holy's career was incredibly important and could have been such a interesting feature of the film. She also was olive skinned so casting her pale white was strange and was the first female captain in a sexist system that later is revealed to have larger issues of corruption that she stands against because she is a fighter. Folly was so underplayed (who is a tech guy in the film, indian, and portrayed as an IT guy, which is pretty racist in the US because thats who most corps outsource IT to, instead of making him a genius in tech). Why the hell cast jane judy dench as commander root (beetroot) who was prone to having his face grow so red during his spouts of rage while chewing on a cigar. having him be a her as holly's commanding officer destroys her character. The book was already so diverse in its characters so why change them so drastically. normally I wouldnt care about ethnicity or sex of characters but in this book it was important because it actually addressed the issues that were behind them. Hey why not cast holly short as dwayne johnson and artemis fowl as beyonce, or should they just stick to the already written story? Wow thats a hard question....
They actually seemed to cast the characters in racist roles. Black butler, indian IT guy, and white police officers.
