I liked it and like everyone else, a little disappointed all the loose ends and lessons came together fast the last 5 minutes of the movie.
What I found most disturbing was the INTENT of the “opposing” parties - specifically Murphy and JLD. Her INTENT was to TRY to learn and welcome. Yes some may have been to “show off her toy”, but it was an effort on her part to integrate, even though it came off as fake and racially judgemental. Murphy, on the other hand - came out full on racist by being mean, setting up Jonah Hill for failure (sometimes unsuccessfully), hating him from the get go because he was white. Came out and was annoyed at whites for “flooding” black businesses etc. He did not want ANY white to marry his daughter. And as you find out, Jonah too it. I find it completely different, that although JLD WAS being condescending and judgy, she was NOT trying to prevent a marriage and she WAS trying to acclimate.
JLD was oblivious was really unaware that she was hurting them - and while you may say “that’s no excuse” - isn’t it different than Murphy’s character, who was actually TRYING to hurt JH and fam? Isn’t there a difference in their motivation and does that matter? They both had bad behavior, but was one worse?
I think most communities are evolving, but if we humiliate and shame people who
have good intentions and want to try to learn, will they just close up for fear of saying something wrong? If we don’t know what people are thinking because they are afraid to speak, how is there a possible teaching moment?
It seems like it’s plausible that JLD character would be in the place she was in at the end because she became aware (too fast though lol)… but it seems unlikely that Murphy’s “woke Muslim” personality, who had so much hatred for all whites, could flip so quick and accept Hill into his family.
I think it would have been a better script if BOTH the black characters and white characters (aside from the two main characters) were unaware of how they were both racist, ignorant, judgy etc. Also would have been nice for JHs best friend/co-podcaster to see some evolvement. It just made a lot of the black characters come off as (don’t say it don’t say it… angry). And made the white characters look vacant and stupid.
Overall a cute movie. Let’s keep
hoping every generation gets better and better with their treatment and respect of each other.
