After purchasing this book on 2020 I put it on the bookshelf until I had time to read it. This past month of May during the Pandemic I removed it from the dusty shelf and carefully read the amazing story of Churchill s leadership handling of Great Britain’s fortunes During World War II . This historical non fiction book reads more like a novel. From the first page until the end you learn unknown facts about the numerous interesting characters surrounding both Churchill a
Bf Hitler . The book focuses mostly on England’s participation in the war during Churchill’s first year as Prime Minister. The author without directly stating it indicates that Churchill’s unique personality and leadership style kept Great Britain from surrendering to Nazi Germany. This 503 page book was extremely interesting, often sad, scary and humorous. The story especially engaged me how England retooled it’s war machine after it was destroyed at Dunkirk. Churchill picked people with brilliant, creative minds to help him create his military. Churchill exceeded the expectations of many of the government leads and British Royalty . The author provides many details of the steps he took to motivate his country to prevail against the Germans. I highly recommend The Splendid and the Vile to both students and non students of history. This book should also recommended for independent reading for anyone that likes a good book to read.
