A Raisin In the Sun was first introduced to me by my High School english teacher. Now 32 years later, I am still in-love with it. In retrospect, my dynamic, passionate educator helped her students see the soul in the story, through the characters and ourselves. As the son of an African American man and family that had come up from slavery (if you will), I had experienced the struggle of many people like them who had relocated from the American south in search of better life. The story line in the play is likely the first or second step of this family out of the horrors of the South in to the North. We see in the play, that the first second steps had considerable obstacles and challenges. Race is the drug of the American dream. It continues to cripple our progress as a country, despite minor and waves of major change. I hope this play continues to inspire minds, spirits, and focus on untangling the path forward.
