This….. is not a good film. Awful humour, which is constantly blurted out after or during serious moments because the writers simply couldn't leave us without jokes for two minutes. Constant tonal shifts because of the jokes, which feel jarring and honestly made me want to walk out of the theatre at some points. The main characters, specifically Peter, makes awful decisions with terrible outcomes which could have been easily avoided, for example, Peter not wanting to send the villains back to their universes because he believes he can change their fate so he takes the box containing the reversal spell but what does that lead to later on? The spell getting blown out of its box by Norman, more villains starting to break through, Aunt May dying and Doctor Strange having to do a spell that makes the entire world forget about Peter himself in order to send them back. This could have been avoided if he simply sent them back then and there but hey, what's being realistic, right? What actually has come before this point, though? Let me ask that question. Peter, through this entire trilogy of his has had next to no character development. He still acts inexperienced and downright stupid, even after all the films he's been in prior, all the "learning experiences" he's had.
We never get to see Spider-Man taking on a challenge by himself. The closest we got was Mysterio in the last film but even then he had help. Having main characters get the help they need can be done well but this is not it. He's always handed stuff on a silver plate. Onto the serious scenes, some of them paced pretty well but then, what does one of the characters do?
They crack a joke. It's got to stop at some point, right? We've got to get a full serious scene at SOME point, right? We do, right at the very end of the film, but by that point, if you're like me, you'll just be wanting to find your way home yourself. This film is so bogged down by its own writing that I can't fathom why people think it's a work of art. It just isn't. Sure, the action's great, but, I don't care what anyone says, that's not what makes a film. It's the writing and characters. Some moments were almost well thought, and Norman's character was acted well enough but this peter hasn't had any of the character development given to others in any other good film franchise to really flesh him out. His friends Ned, Flash and MJ also have the personality of a vanilla ice cream, and are unbelievably irritating, especially Ned and Flash, who have quite possibly the least amount of funniness I’ve ever seen 2 characters have. Ned is also just a plot device, as he can use doctor strange ring magic now for whatever reason, which is how we get the other Spider-Men in the plot. The worst part of this movie for me, however, is the part where Peter lets all the villains out and has them come to Happy's apartment. They are villains, responsible for doing a lot of bad things and he just lets them out like it’s nothing. They are MENTALLY UNSTABLE and POWERFUL. What on earth did he think was going to happen? AND, the only reason any of the events in this film transpired was simply because Peter couldn't keep his mouth shut during Strange's spell, and strange was also dumbed down to oblivion here. He would’ve never done this before. I've heard the argument of Peter being a very morally driven person which I agree with, but I don't think that should override basic common sense. They could've simply been kept in their prisons and given the cures there but no. What an awful film. It follows no logic, and relies solely on its nostalgia, unfunny humour, nonsensical plot and action to push it on.
