They really needed better writing and some basic knowledge of submarines and physics. Diesel doesn't explode from sparks, hull pressure doesn't make your ears pop like in an aeroplane and the Russian navy would certainly notice a surfaced sub full of brits leaving Sevastopol, but somehow they’re more worried about surfacing in the middle of the black sea. Also most of the plot is driven by incompetence and accidents. Terrible writing for a stellar cast.
