Its a novel that i first read during my third year literature class at the University of Nairobi. I got a glimpse of the novel through the late Prof chris Lukorito Wanjala who was by then giving a lecture on South-African prose.
The literature of J.m coetzee is undebatably a merging point between realism and idealism. He weaves a very good Aristotelian tragedy that faces the protagonist culminating into total disintergration of the same character. A disintergration with a purpose: the self rediscovery of the character David Lurie who goes through staircases of moral violations before he descends in an abyss of digrace.
This literature is a must read for lovers of literature and literary criticisms since at the same time it acts as an eye-opener about the ills that faced africa as a result cultural alienation. such include, women subjugation and alienation as result of clash of western educational systems and culture for instance David lurie a professor of communication and romantic literature case study of how education devoid of morality can not only be self-destructive at personal level but also both a cultural and professional disgrace to the society.
