A shallow and poorly thought out Doom Eternal clone that barely meets the minimum requirements of being a functional FPS. It's like the devs took everything they saw id perfect in Doom Eternal and added it to this game without thinking why the systems worked together in the first place.
Nothing in this game compliments each other. The chi blast is spammable because it recharges too quickly, yet feels weak and useless at the same time. There's only one enemy type that the chi blast directly counters. The weapons and enemy types do not interact in any meaningful way, and the weapons are as bland as you can get in a shooter of this genre. Arguably the only weapon with depth, the katana and its elemental attacks, gets weighed down due to some terrible controls and feedback when it comes to using the elemental attacks. Sliding is nearly useless since the dash has no recharge, I don't know why they added it.
The grappling hook is boring. You click the button and get pulled towards your target, there's nothing you can do in the middle of it. It also feels awful to use. Your character slows to a stop when you activate the grappling hook and it feels more like you're floating through the air. Like, what's the point of a grappling hook if you can't even grapple flying enemies?
The environmental design is the best part of this game. The levels have lots of variation from snowy landscapes, to jungles, to lava, etc. Platforming has a huge focus here and it's the only thing Shadow Warrior 3 does better than Eternal. It's much more visually interesting and actually makes use of the grappling hook, unlike Eternal with the meathook.
Yet despite the good environments, it has some of the most uninspiring arena designs. Most of them are flat, one floor terrains with very few walls that don't support the size of waves. The enemy waves do not flow in a way that make sense either. You kill half of the demons and then it spawns in another 10 demons in the middle of it, overflowing the arena and making it feel like you've made zero progress. The fodder respawn way too quickly as well, contributing to that feeling.
The sound design is meaty and punchy, but not in a good way. Everything sounds compressed, meaning everything sounds the same. It's impossible to make out individual noises other than your guns firing, and when you're not shooting the music and other sounds muddle together. I didn't even realize the chi blast had a recharge sound effect since it's impossible to hear. Meanwhile in Doom Eternal, you can make out the music, your guns, your equipment and dash recharging, and a cacodemon attempting to bite you from behind, all at the same time.
Some people will say the writing is cringe but I personally didn't care. I think it's fine for games to have fun if its aware, which this game with its comic aesthetic clearly does. There's really only one character that's particularly annoying but they go away near the end. The story and writing are nothing special however.
7/10. Will you enjoy it if you liked Doom Eternal? Probably. Will you master it and replay it over again like you could with Doom Eternal? Almost certainly not.
