I was so disappointed with this film I’m sad to say. I loved the book. Although not brilliantly written, the story was beautiful and sad in all the right measures. Unfortunately it was a if the story wasn’t well understood by the people who directed the film. The film emphasised the bits that didn’t matter, and rode rough shod over the bits that did, or left them out entirely. Kya’s aching for her mother to return. The empty rooms in her house. The hunger. The comments made by the towns people as a being a ‘dirty marsh girl’. I really felt that it was the level trauma metered out to the character of Kya, that made you want her to overcome and succeed. The scene where we first see Chase playing with his friends at the beach, was not well thought out at all. She was isolated, cut off, hidden and watching from afar. So why in the film is she sat on the beach? A lot of the scenes are clunky. And the acting feels amateurish. The love story needs a build up, and this didn’t happen. So you didn’t feel invested in the love story. It felt like someone trying to tell a story really quickly ! The end ! Left the me cold. So disappointed .
