A truly wonderful fire emblem game that has captured my heart with how unique it is. I’ve put many hours making my units as powerful as possible and have had great fun with Thabes Labyrinth. The map design isn’t the best however, and while Fates is notorious for its horrible writing, it certainly has better gameplay.
But! The entire dungeon system makes up for that. Perhaps the best experience I’ve had in a fire emblem game, save for the absolute freedom that Three Houses provides with unit classes, without the need for an extra item.
The spell system is pretty wonderful, but rather overpowered. I have Conrad set as a Sage, and his excalibur has a solid 60 crit chance and his attack stat is maxed out… leading to some very easy one shots, even on the 8th floor of Thabes Labyrinth.
Other overpowered classes are the bow knight with its range, and the dread fighter. Placing Valbar as a dread fighter, for example, is utterly disgusting and will easily eliminate most enemies.
There’s many changes crossing over from Fire Emblem: Gaiden- the original game. For example, you can only hold one item at a time, there is no durability to worry about, spells cost HP (with the exception of Nosferatu, which heals you), and combat arts also cost HP, allowing for infinite use of spells if you can spare HP on spells with higher might.
The story of Shadows of Valentia isn’t perfect, but it’s still a wonderful, beautiful game that has captured my heart with its art, voice acting, and characters. I absolutely suggest it for the 3Ds, because even alongside games like Three Houses, it stands strong.
If I could in good conscience give this game 5 stars, I would. But 5 stars implies perfection, and this game is excellent, but not perfect.
