7/10
It had a complicated production and it translates into the film. I really hope they make a sequel and they can let the director do his job, or let Guillermo del Toro make his final third one.
There are nods to a lot of important parts of the lore of Hellboy. Like Lobster Johnson and the Osiris Club.
There is a scene that is clearly a nod to the first Del Toro film, but within the scene you can already tell what is wrong with this movie.
Great production value, incredible Actor’s poorly directed, does not take the time to let Actor’s show emotion and sink in, you can tell the actors are giving their best but scenes are always cut before you really start engaging emotionally, poor dialogs and bad writing, the script itself it’s not bad, you can appreciate where the story was going, sadly it never reaches its full potential.
I do not know who is to blame. But the dialog leaves a lot to be desired.
Since the movie starts and you see the red queen being betrayed you can tell what rhythm the movie will have, and it doesn’t open well.
In short, it has an amazing production value, it deserves to be seen for all the hard work that amazing actors and professionals of movie production out in, but it is a movie that suffered from producers getting on the way of the director and meddling with the film.
A shame that the movie could not live up to the amazing Del Toro films that came before them.
Still if you like supernatural adventures and like Hellboy, (watch the movie and enjoy it) It is enjoyable, you just can’t help but wish it was a little better. I really hope they make a sequel and let the characters shine trough.
I was left wanting to see Abe Sapiens so much. You have a small moment at the end, but if there is no sequel it was a wasted opportunity.
