I’m sticking it out through the final season, despite my disappointment in this series these last two seasons.
I have watched as Kara has been deduced to a side character in these last few years. It is even more obvious, as the writers have done nothing to develop her as a character this season. It’s disappointing because this is the last season. I still hope that they get their act together and develop her properly.
Unfortunately, supergirl and even the flash are victims of the same problem. There are too many superheroes, too many secondary character storylines. So the main storyline is lost in this mess. Side characters are important, but not at the expense of the main character’s story. If you have a character just standing around doing nothing, then why is that character there? How does this character help Kara move forward? Does this character help her develop or is Kara helping them develop? If Kara is helping them develop and not being developed herself, then it’s a story not worth telling. We as an audience are here to be told Kara’s story, not any other character’s story.
This series had a good start, we got to see Kara become supergirl. We saw her face personal challenges. Then we got to the fifth season and Kara as a character was put on the shelf. The writers didn’t seem to know what to do with her. They made the fifth season extremely political and it was unbearable. Is it okay to put politics into a show? Yes, but only if it fits in with the character’s development. The thing is while it did develop her, it also preached at the audience without fully exploring all sides of the story. An audience doesn’t want to be preached at. They want to be entertained. They want to get lost in a character’s story. They want to learn everything about their character. I want to feel her pain and loss. We did for a while, but now the audience is disconnected from this character because the focus has been removed from her and put on everyone else.
Is this show worth watching? Yes and no. While the acting is good, the storytelling becomes inconsistent with who the characters are, and every side story has lost purpose, at least when it comes to the main character. The fifth season is so bad, and this sixth season is looking to be just as bad.
Watch the first two or three seasons, then just stop watching, because it just gets worse after the third season. I might even say season 4 is still pretty watchable, but I don’t know if you would want to suffer through that too.
