My dad was 1st Regiment A squadron. He was a Bren gunner. He received the military medal for taking out the machine gun nests during the first landing in Sicily, and many snipers in the following skirmishes. He was 21 years old. He spoke little of his 6 years in SAS, however the British war museum has 5 hours of him recounting some of his experiences. He did say that they were not heroes, just extraordinary men with a job at hand. He was promoted to Corporal in Italy and Sargent in France.
The portrayal of the SAS in this show is abysmal. Paddy Mayne was a friend of my father, and my mother said what a well spoken intelligent man he was. Nothing compared to the character in this show. (My mom is originally from Donegal, and the actors accent is atrocious)
My dad did mention that 1 and 2 SAS were very different. 1 SAS were relaxed and somewhat indifferent to rank. 2 SAS were gung-ho, spit polish type soldiers.
The female French spy is a completely ridiculous made up character. Embarrassing would be a suitable description.
I had to turn off the show many times, as it was so incredibly ridiculous.
Iโm not sure Iโll be able to suffer through season 3.
