This film is surprisingly funny. Sure, it's got gags for normal, average Joes and Jonelles to HA HA but it might also go down as a real documentary of the 2010s and pop culture.
Thing is Samberg & Co. rip the absolute p*ss out of everyone and everything and yet also play homage at the same time, meaning they have managed to get one of the most remarkable cameo lists of performer's in film - who all seem genuinely thrilled and invested in the movie. Everyone is in on the joke - even the background actors (which almost always appears not to be the case). It feels like a labour of love from guy's who are the insider's outsiders. Frankly, it's a near perfect execution in what could have been a totally unmemorable, been-done-a-million-times-before, post-SNL soiree into film.
There is one scene I will never ever forget. No spoiler alert; where he is in the middle of an argument with his groupies and putting them to test - when at the close of the scene there is a close up of his PA, a scene that made me punch a laugh into the air. I had to clammer to pause the film, I was in pieces. I cannot tell you how I relate to that scene in any better way than Samberg played it - which is what film is about.
They nailed this and frankly, it is a hugely enjoyable film with tonnes of laughs and even more mileage for film and pop nerds and movie buffs to get on with.
Smashed it.
This film will definitely go down as a cult film in years to come. It's not Spinal Tap but it is their chode grandson.
