to me, there were really only three performances that were truly worthy of even being compared to the original broadway production's: brennin hunt, jordan fisher, and brandon victor dixon. valentina just didn't have the vocal capacity for 'today 4 u' and even though vanessa hudgens was very good, not much can rival idina menzel's verson.
part of me thinks that the odds were stacked against them from the start, with rent already being such a beloved musical. if the production were an original, people would probably be having different opinions.
the show felt like a celebration of jonathan larson's music and his legacy, which we can all certainly appreciate, but it didn't feel like rent.
