I just finished Season 1, and now starting Season 2, "Scare". I think it's brilliant that the writers use the genre of horror to display the deep, deep rooted reality of historical and modern racism in America. After watching the "cat in the bag"scene, it's not hard to imagine how events like that, whether based on actual events, or something similiar to, create a real life nightmare (horror) for black Americans. I think the use of "in your face drama" is absolutely necessary to drive home the point that we must acknowledge the level of depravity that black Americans endured in this country.
