An excellent collection, a very valuable companion and background to Lord of the Rings. However, it’s also true that Prof Tolkien didn’t consider that he’d brought them yet to publishable form, so they are less dependable than LotR or the Hobbit or even the Silmarilion. On the other hand, it has chapters like “the Istari”, with the origins of those whom the Hobbits called “wizards”; and “the Hunt for the Ring”, telling how Sauron’s Ringwraiths tried to find the One after Gollum had betrayed its continued existence. Many followers of Middle Earth will be glad to have them, even with possible inaccuracies.
