Utterly extraordinary. A very complete, well thought-out exploration of the current and potential future of a patriarchal society, What if women had the power that men have right now? How might that look? Would it be the solution to everything? Would it create equality? Would it eventually lead to a similarly imbalanced world? It really is a hugely studied and extremely considered take on modern, and potential future, gender-based society. 10/10. Further reading to The Handmaid’s Tale. And to add: quite a few negative reviews here. That’s cool. We don’t all like the same stuff. But: I do so hope that some of the negative reviewers can learn to understand the purpose of ‘speculative fiction’: 1) ‘This is how things are right now’ 2) ‘what if a fundamental part of that was radically different?’ 3) ‘here’s a story based on 2).’ Doesn’t mean the author is biased. Just means they have a capacity for imagining how things might be different. The clue is in the word ‘speculative’. If you liked The Handmaid’s Tale…. well then. This is that.
