I know this is Ruth's story, but Picoult completely disrespects the character who lost her son in a sudden, tragic way. I know Brit was a racist human being but when she slits her wrists at her son's grave, Ruth's reaction when she finds out is to call her crazy. Who's the hateful one now? Brit is discarded at the end and somehow everyone else lives happily ever after. I don't see myself reading this book again. It was preachy and the stereotypes are hard to digest. Everyone is one-dimensional. A rare miss for Picoult, but when she's good she's good, when she's bad she's really bad.
