This book made my daughter, who has a very soft heart, hate reading. I agree with another poster that this book is very wrong in many ways. I was told by my daughter's reading teacher that the intent is to instill empathy. There are many, more positive ways to instill empathy. How about a little girl loses her puppy and goes an adventurous search for him. That this book won a Newberry causes me to never trust another book award. Yes, I read the book cover to cover, and no, I would not recommend it to anyone; especially the target audience of 6-10 years old. Only a sado-masochist would think this is a good book. I would give it negative-5 stars if I could.
