Though Anderson's visual mastery is clearly on full display— from the unique production design, set pieces, and gorgeous cinematography, nothing beyond the pure aesthetic of Asteroid City is anything to rave about. Out of the entirety of this A-list cast, which is simply too extensive to list, not one gives a good or even remotely memorable performance. That isn't due to bad acting (mostly), but rather the choppy, uninspiring, and uncharismatic way in which Anderson writes his characters. At this point in his career, it is trite beyond belief. Additionally, the two main threads of this movie meanders along with zero sense of urgency for character or plot development, which results in an unwarranted, lazy third act that attempts to produce a strange meta-commentary about the literal making of "Asteroid City." Can't wait for the uncritical Wes Anderson die-hards to gatekeep this mess of a movie and proclaim it is some sort of masterpiece...which it is clearly not.
