Contains spoiler! They succeeded in one thing: this movie itself IS a joke. Apart from Joaquin Phoenix’s brilliant acting, and a beautiful photography, there’s no story whatsoever. It’s just about a trial and when he finally escapes and we’re vouching for him, he gets caught again and killed by a random character. The movie feels like a Lady Gaga music video featuring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. 90% of the time, the music scenes have nothing to add to the story. Another thing that bothered me is that I didn’t feel like I was seeing Harley Quinn there, it was just Lady Gaga. Don’t get me wrong, her acting is decent, but with all the music clips I couldn’t separate her from the character. If you take away the songs, you will have a 30 minute movie that doesn’t have much happening. The ending was disappointing too. Joker disappoints their fans, his lover, the inmates, and us the audience. Every time they were building up a very interesting scene, a nonsense musical act would start and break the momentum.
