I don’t usually leave reviews but i think the 1 star bombs don’t do it justice. I grew up watching the og little mermaid over and over again as a kid, though it’s been a while so that’s probably why i’m more open to the new changes. Initially, like every live action announcement, i dreaded this one too but somehow ended up seeing it anyway. From the first scene to the end, i was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out. Started tearing up during the part of your world scene because halle’s vocals were amazing and i just remembered being a kid again seeing ariel do all that. The visuals and sounds during musical scenes were just rlly good, they made under the sea and kiss the girl look great in tandem with the whimsy of the traditional animation. Prince boy especially; from trailers and promo pics he was not doing it for me but by the end of the movie you’d wanna marry him too because of all the depth added to his story and relationship w/ her. Also ugly aa looking sebastian managed to carry the whole movie. Ofc there were still some so-so parts like the freaky crawling up the rock for the wave splash moment (what was that really), the merfolk could’ve been shown more since they’re all so pretty??, songs we could’ve done without specifically prince boy with the autotune and awkwafina sneaking in a rap, the infamous dark parts where you could see nothing for a min; but it was still a good time and you leave the cinema feeling like you watched something magical. Maybe it’s mostly nostalgia idk, but my little brother who was prepared to sleep the whole time and never saw the og got more into it than me, despite being one of those people who hated the casting for the same silly reasons as everyone at first. It’s really quite a good movie as long as you don’t expect it to be a carbon copy of the original. While this joins cinderella and maleficent in greatness, still please no more live actions and invest in new stories disney i beg.
