I agree with others in that there was entirely too much confusing exposition in the first episode. Fans of the books would understand, but they are not the ones that need the backstory. It would be much better to weave the differences of Lyra's world into the dialogue and let the viewer learn those differences, e.g. what daemons are, the Ministerium, etc organically as the story unfolds rather than a series of lines at the beginning. If we wanted to read, we would just pick up the books! I was expecting more richness and authenticity from the series, but hopefully it will get better.
