Heavy, heavy, dense prose for over 500 pages. Brilliantly written but very hard work. Every minute detail of the character’s thoughts and behaviour is described laboriously page after page, leaving little room for the reader to find any pleasure in it. It felt like swimming with a brick tied around your ankle.
