I'm a fan of other works by Mr. Follett, but couldn't get out of the blocks on this one.

Basically, the protagonist is the smartest, and deftest, character in the world. Never slips up, takes many chances, always wins, and makes a mockery of law enforcement. If he was just half as bright and daring as the story leads you to believe it's hard to imagine that for the previous 10 years to being in prison he was just some small town lawyer going no where. Without spoilers, I can tell you there are multiple occasions in the story where things simply would not have happened the way its described. Maybe the FBI is, on occasion, the big dummy in the room. In this case it's all the time. But this story seems to be written by someone who watches too many prime time cop dramas, each character a kind of graphic novel cut-out of what you'd expect, exaggerated. The main thing, though, is it's much different IRL. All said, though, it moves along. No big surprises.

Good read, loved the Southern setting which I'm not very familiar with, and loved the long generational time-period development. The only qualm I have, and the reason for 3 stars instead of 4, is the criminal enterprise was too few in characters as to be believable, and also they didn't seem to be smart enough to be outwitting the police. Other than that, I enjoyed it very much.
