I read the book by Celeste Ng first before watching the series. A lot of the details are very different in the adaptation. The book is absolutely amazing and I really loved it. The show is fine too and both Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington have given amazing performances. But unlike the book, the show has made it entirely about race. It was an interesting angle for sure, maybe even important, but it kind of seemed to convey that just because one is a person of colour (Mia/Bebe) and has been oppressed for years because of their race, or is a part of the Queer community (Izzy), it justifies all their horrible actions - which is something I absolutely disagree with. In my opinion, both Mia Warren and Bebe Chow were extremely selfish, narcissistic, irresponsible characters – and that's a fact that has zero connection with their races. I know Izzy was just a kid but I didn't like her either. In the book, we don't know what Mia's race is, and it has no mention of Izzy's sexual orientation anywhere. Mia in the book was in fact pretty likeable. On the show I actually felt sorry for Elena and even though she had her own major flaws, I still think she got unfairly ambushed. I am not sympathising with her because she is white. I am a progressive-liberal WOC myself; I am anti-racist and also an LGBTQIA+ ally. But I saw these characters for who they were as people through a colour-blind perspective. And as bad as some may think Elena was I still think that Mia was worse (as written in the show). The show was a decent watch but I would recommend the book any day; it is way better and more agreeable.
