Having read the novel on the basis of a recommendation by Andre Agassi whose biography happened to be written by JR, the subject/author I had expected more.
The irony is that the author finally falls on his feet by having his memoir made into a film. Ironical as he's basically an average writer and yet he has now hit the jackpot. The book didn't really draw me in. It seemed unauthentic, even if it is based on real events. Characters seem superficial and perhaps due to his lack of writing ability. I was interested to see if the film could bring it to life and take certain aspects of the book and make more of them. It failed unfortunately, for me. It's shot in a flat way, and has the look of a budget TV series. Central to the film is the bar and the characters that reside in it, yet both aspects lack any character or interest. Main actor is good, rest average but perhaps that's down to poor script and direction. All a bit flat and unreal, despite being based on a real memoir.
