I found it compelling to read an historical novel that is set in the time that I have lived...Although I wasn't aware of the Duplessis horror of sending children in orphanages to mental homes in the 50's to save money, I had just left Quebec in August 1970 before the FLQ crisis. I thought the book presented a good balance of each side for independence through the well developed characters and certainly enabled ot me to see the horrors of the 50's incarnation of the children and the very diverent approaches to what or who Quebec should be...
