I have been a student of Greek history and culture for 50 years. As such, I have read a large portion of the literature. I consider the Iliad to be the superior of the two, but I believe the Odyssey is the better story, and I would teach that book to students if I had to teach Homer. I would focus on the last few chapters, emphasizing the moral issues they raise as I think young people today might be interested in that rather than in the hexameters.

The book is a historical novel and it seems to follow fairly closely the known facts of Billy’s life. It has a certain objectivity to it. The writing is clear without an attempt at literary pretension. It’s worth a read.
