I absolutely loved The Handmaid’s Tale from Seasons 1 through 4 — thoughtful, intense, and emotionally grounded. But Seasons 5 and 6 completely fell apart. The writing became lazy, inconsistent, and disconnected from everything the show had built. Season 6 especially felt like a slap in the face to long-time fans.
Bruce Miller’s recent interviews only made things worse. He rambles through contradictory explanations about Nick Blaine’s arc, clearly trying to do damage control. One minute Nick is part of the resistance, the next he’s Gestapo. None of it lines up with earlier seasons — or with Margaret Atwood’s work. It’s clear the writers didn’t plan for this and are just making it up as they go.
Instead of honoring a fan-favorite like Nick, they reduced his complex arc to a plot device and made his “death” a spectacle, then mocked the fans who were hurt by it. And Elisabeth Moss? As an Executive Producer, she participated in the gaslighting too, pushing a PR narrative that undermined the emotional legacy of the show.
What once was a powerful, layered series about love, survival, and rebellion has become cynical, hollow, and insulting. Fans deserve better. I won’t be watching The Testaments.
