Great film. You don't need subtitles when the actors can actually act. Getting emotionally invested in the characters is the main hook of this film. They've just survived a devastating war and are trying to salvage what's left when Godzilla shows up. There is no honor in war, particularly when you lost. Hanging onto scraps of pride and dignity and wondering if it was all worth it- they're slapped down by one more battle. This is not a nice Godzilla like we've seen in recent American films- no survivors cheering to the monster as he walks through the wreckage of a city back into the sea. This is a rampaging monster and we get no insight into its 'motivation'. It's a force of nature...an angry one. And there's no Americans to save the day. It's up to civilians and a few former military members to fight for their survival. And you can't help but pick sides and cheer for their ingenuity. Be warned- it has an emotionally rewarding ending. I'll probably see it again.
