Half reboot, half sequel. Sat through it feeling like it probably would have been a lot more enjoyable to stay home and just watch the original for the umpteenth time.
At no point was I actually drawn in to the story. This was probably due to all of the nostalgic flashbacks of the first film which were tenuously tied into the plot.
Neil Patrick Harris’ character was probably the best new idea. His closing speech suggested that the movie was a kind of metaphor for the mid pandemic current day real world, which was the most thought provoking moment of the film.
The lighting/colour seemed strange, not sure if that was deliberate and intended to symbolize the new version of the matrix. For whatever reason though, it served as another reason to be very aware I was watching a movie as opposed to just getting immersed into a story.
The start of the movie seemed blurry and almost out of focus, maybe that was intentional too, but if so it wasn’t well done.
I went into the theatre with low expectations, hoping to be surprised, and left feeling disappointed and like I should have known better.
