Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin is a great time and doesn't deserve the hate that it's been getting from people like IGN's Tom Jorgensen. That sounds like a made up name if I'm being honest. I, like many of you out there, dealt with a severe case of found-footage fatigue in the late 2000's and early 2010'. If you've seen one you've seen most. And don't get me wrong, NOK doesn't break new ground this time around, but it does add some really great sequences to the format. I found the slow-mo shots and drone footage to be a welcome and refreshing addition to sub-genre. The factor that can really make a found footage movie shine is believable acting and the cast really achieved that (Dale!). The story, while not perfect, delivered a fun take on demons and inherited familial trauma too. I'm also a sucker for a good folk and cult setting. I think the biggest problem with the movie is the Paranormal Activity title weighing it down. "Next of Kin" would suffice. My only regret it not being able to see this on the big screen. Horror always hits much harder on a huge screen with the lights off and next to a friend. I tried to recreate that in my living room as best I could. I imagine people like IGN's Tom Jorgensen probably watched it on his phone with the lights on while he was writing another review with bad takes. William Eubanks did a great job with this one and is quickly becoming one of my favorite horror directors Please do yourself a favor and give this one a shot. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I hope the IGN' Tom Jorgensen finds the help he needs and overcomes his fear of opening up and allowing fun into his little baby heart.
